A table cover needs to balance appearance with everyday practicality. The correct size depends on the table's length, width, shape and the amount of edge overhang you prefer. Measure the furniture rather than relying on a generic table-size label.
Measure a rectangular or square table
Measure the tabletop from end to end for length and side to side for width. If you want a drape over the edges, add the desired overhang on both sides. For example, a 120 cm × 60 cm tabletop with a 5 cm overhang on each side needs a cover approximately 130 cm × 70 cm.
Round tables
Measure the diameter across the centre of the tabletop. A round cover should be selected by diameter plus the desired drop around the edge. Also consider whether chairs regularly catch the hanging fabric; a shorter drop may be more practical for a dining table used several times a day.
Choose for your routine
For a dining or work table used every day, a material that is easy to wipe and wash can be more useful than a delicate decorative fabric. For a table used mainly for display, appearance may be the higher priority.
Keep the cover clean
- Wipe small spills soon after they happen.
- Follow the fabric care instructions for machine or hand washing.
- Do not store the cover while it is damp.
- Fold it neatly when not in use to reduce unnecessary creasing.
